Chapter 28:
A Secret is Born
While Miranda and her girls were celebrating the newest member of their family, Nameless and Cordelia were both red in the face and having a conversation about her maybe starting one.
âSo anyways, are you giving out free babies or not?â The blushing baker asked in a bit of a whine.
âUh, huh?â
Safe to say Nameless wasnât on top of things at the moment.
Cordelia drew in a nervous breath.
âYou need to have kids. I want kids. Oldeera doesnât have a penis. Come on man, donât make this weird.â
Erica snorted.
âBecause that statement wasnât weird at all.â
She was lying on her stomach on one of the couches, Ophelia replacing Ninaâs crude splint on her tail with a proper one, the cat having already drank some of Millyâs milk to help mend the fracture.
Everyone in the room was watching Nameless now, waiting for him to articulate a response, but when he was unable to, his angel did.
âIt... is for the best, husband.â Volka said quietly; âThe world needs more men and women like you in it.â
âYeah, but-â He finally sputtered, gesturing somewhat wildly at Cordelia; âI mean, we know each other!â
The baker dipped her head in acknowledgment of the issue, but remained undeterred.
âWe do. So you know that if I have your baby, theyâll be taken care of.â Her chin lifted with confidence and her eyes brimmed with sincerity; âIâll be a good mother Nameless. I swear on my bond. And any child of yours would be good too, because so are you.â
Her face was still flushed, but her determination was plain to see.
âAnd I will do everything in my power to keep the child safe. So there is that as well.â Oldeera proclaimed; âHe or she will be safer than any infant ever to walk this world. Safe and loved.â
Namelessâs eyes stung as a lump formed in his throat, unable to refute either girlâs words.
But there was still the other thing.
âCordelia, you know weâd have to... you and I, sex I mean.â He gestured awkwardly between them again.
Her mouth fell open as she gasped, eyes wide with mock surprise.
âWe would?!â
Nina let out a short laugh at her faux reaction as Nameless turned a bit pink.
Giving him a break, Cordelia abandoned her joke quickly.
âYes, I am aware of the mechanics of it. More than you are, I bet. Here, letâs both draw a diagram of the reproductive system, someone time us.â
âOkay dearheart, I think you are getting off topic.â Ophelia interrupted tartly, the perceptive Flutterby seeing through her attitude; âAnd Iâm afraid that you wonât be able to keep deflecting his concerns with humour.â
Cordelia looked at her and drew in a breath, but instead of saying anything she instead let it out all at once, her cheeks billowing.
After a moment, she tried again.
âNameless. You are the best man I have ever met. And I know this is selfish of me to ask, but please... I-I want to have a baby. Iâve always wanted to have a baby. And I canât think of anyone Iâd rather have one with.
